The old timber Church in Reykholt

The older Reykholt Church was built in 1886-87. The church is a good example of the later kind of timber church with a tower. The church served until 1996, when the new church was consecrated. It came under the protection of the National Museum in 2001 and is now part of The National Museums collection of houses.

The church was in a poor condition and had undergone considerable change during the first decades of the 20th century. Current restorations have tried to bring the building closer to its original design.
